Academia Vitae University College

Academia Vitae University College is a small residential liberal arts college in the historic city of Deventer. Its goal is to encourage students to acquire a passion for learning, discerning judgment and social engagement. It encourages students to live a life of ideas in an atmosphere that stresses critical thinking and tolerance for ambiguity. The University College is an institution for young students (18-25) who wish to study the liberal arts and sciences in preparation for a professional place in society.

The University College offers four programs:

  1. Junior College is a liberal arts program for ambitious high school students (5 and 6 VWO/ grades 11 and 12). The Junior College meets once a week for one semester.
  2. Freshman Year is an academic gap year for recent high school graduates (Dutch VWO, international baccalaureate or equivalent) who wish to postpone their definite choice of what to study and where. The Prep or Freshman Year provides a broad intellectual foundation in European cultural history, training in academic skills, and college/ university counseling.
  3. Minor "Cultural Literacy" is a broad, cultural and academically rigorous program for second- and third-year bachelor students from other Dutch universities. This is a multidisciplinary, intensive semester-long minor program (20-30 ECTS), with emphasis on European cultural and intellectual history, and social and international relations.
  4. Semester Abroad at Academia Vitae is a broad, academically rigorous program with special attention to European cultural and intellectual history, and social and international relations.
