Do you want to learn more about science, philosophy, art and culture? Do you really want to know what Plato, Kant and Sartre are all about? What is knowledge? What is beauty in the arts? These questions and many others are not new, but they matter to us now. For high school seniors from Deventer and surroundings, Academia Vitae offers a special program based on the Liberal Arts. Classes are small, allowing for intensive study in a context that promotes a lively interchange of ideas.
For ten weeks, students will attend classes at the stately Jordenshuis in Deventer and work with classical texts, works of art, and each other. They will learn what it means to read, listen, speak, and write at an academic level. Junior College at Academia Vitae emphasizes critical and creative thinking, class discussion, and primary texts.
Although academic content is the primary focus, some teaching moves toward personal interpretation and application in daily life. Why is Newton so important for our culture? What is my concern with Dickens or Hemingway? What does this piece of music by Schoenberg reveal to me? What are the fields or 'conversations' that I most want to join? Mathematics? Music? Or both?
